Changes

Key:  Additions   Deletions

1) Size Matters: Corpus Christi (Corpus for short) is on one of the smallest of the original Old Colleges. This year, the MCR welcomed nearly 30 new graduate students. Even if you involve yourself only occasionally with college, you almost automatically know half of the room when you walk into a bop or into Hall. Plus, that also translates to better opportunities for funding and resources. Funding and resources for graduates includes (but is not limited to) travel grants, academic book grants and Corpus-specific scholarships.

2) The Common Room Itself: The current MCR, as in the room, not the institution, used to be the old Senior Common Room. For Sir Tim, the President of Corpus, "It remains my favorite room in the college." Wood paneling, a crescent bar, three beautiful leather couches, daily newspapers, weekly periodicals, free coffee, tea and biscuits, a new stereo and a computer connected to a large wide screen TV (with free laser printing) are all featured.

3) Liddell: Most graduate students are housed in Liddell, a modern complex of several residences on Iffley Road shared with Christ Church. Flats of three or four are available with shared toilets, kitchens and showers.

4) The Resources: Corpus has from its inception been known for its excellent library and collections. Corpus students will proudly tell you that upon visiting the Corpus library, Erasmus declared it one of the seven wonders of the world. Which tells you a lot about the sort of vacations that Erasmus took. Boasting one of the finest collections in the humanities and social sciences outside the Bodleian, Corpus offers huge advantages for students in classics, history, literature, and social sciences. The open attitude of the college also means that even though there are proportionally fewer scientists, their needs are catered to insofar as the college is able, and requests for purchases and resources are encouraged.

5) Location: Location, location, location - Corpus Christi College is located on Merton St, which is a quiet and picturesque street only a few hundred metres away from High street (the centre of Oxford) and other significant university buildings such as the Examination Schools.

6) Excellent ContractContact with the Senior Common Room: As a small college, Corpus is able to provide its graduate students in the MCR with far more contact with the academic fellows of the SCR than many other colleges. This is achieved through, amongst other things, free weekly SCR lunches, the SCR/MCR seminar series, high table dining rights, and graduate lunches/dinners.

Testimonials:

"I was living in New Zealand when I was applying, and didn't know how I would fit in with a totally 'foreign' college. I asked advice from the academics I knew in NZ, and finally chose Corpus because of its reputation for being really friendly and inclusive of foreign students. I wanted to be in a small college because I thought I would be more in touch with everything that was happening. During the application process, all done while I was in NZ, I got in touch with one of the Corpus tutors. He was amazingly helpful, and helped dispel the idea that Oxford was going to be snobbish and elitist. My final reason for choosing Corpus is that I was signing up for Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. Corpus has some superb tutors in those areas, and the Corpus Library is phenomenally well equipped for that subject.

When I got to Corpus, I discovered even more benefits. Possibly because the College is so small, the staff and tutors will take a real interest in you as a person, and help as much as they can. You don't get lost in the system. As an older student at a predominantly undergrad college, I found that the presence of undergrads added an extra dimension of colour and life. I really do think that graduates can benefit from having the younger students around, and vice-versa. I was a heavy user of the MCR, and the social support and fun it offered are among my best memories. Corpus is very generous with its student housing, which takes the stress out of life like you would not believe. Socially, it is really good if you eat in Hall, and there can be no doubting that Corpus students are among the best fed in Oxford.

Everything that I had hoped for from Corpus was fulfilled. I would recommend it to anyone, graduate or undergraduate."
