Dr. Judith Maltby

Judith Maltby has been Chaplain and Fellow since 1993.

In common with many members of the MCR, Judith did her first degree in the United States and came to England to do graduate work (in her case at Cambridge), so she has first hand experience in making the transition from the North American system to Oxbridge.

In addition to her duties as Chaplain, Dr Maltby teaches early modern British history and Reformation theology. She has written and edited books in the area of post-Reformation parish religion and parliamentary history in the period for Cambridge University Press and the Royal Historical Society. She is presently working on a book length study of the Church of England during the civil war and Commonwealth period. Religion in Revolutionary England (edited with Christopher Durston for Manchester University Press) was published in 2006, as well as a major chapter in the Oxford Guide to the Book of Common Prayer.

Dr Maltby has also published articles in the field of contemporary church issues and is an occasional contributor to the BBC Radio 4 Sunday Programme and The Guardian on current religious affairs. She has held visiting fellowships at Trinity College, Melbourne and the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. In 2004, she was made Reader in Church History by the University.
